As Austin HVAC professionals we tell central Austin homeowners again and again how important it is to change the air filter on a regular basis – but unfortunately, our warnings often fall on deaf ears. Maybe because they’re not all that costly and seem insignificant, many homeowners just don’t give the air filter much thought. This is unfortunate considering it’s one of the most important components of your heating and cooling system when it comes to good airflow, better indoor air quality, and equipment that functions more efficiently!

How do you know when it’s time to change the air filter? Here are a few signs.

A buildup of dust inside your home. Whether you notice more dust floating around in the air or a build-up on furnishings and other surfaces, excess dust usually indicates it’s time to change the filter. Dusty air not only contributes to poor indoor air quality, it can aggravate the symptoms in those members of your family who suffer from allergies or respiratory problems.

Does the outdoor unit feel hot to the touch? This is another sign it’s time to replace or clean your air filter, depending on the type you have. When the filter becomes clogged with dust, dirt, pet dander and other debris, your HVAC system has to work harder to make your home comfortable. If you notice the outside unit feels hot, it’s an indication your equipment is straining to do its job. Shut off the unit and contact our Austin heating and cooling technicians right away in order to avoid possible damage.

Your system seems to cycle longer than usual. If you’ve noticed your HVAC system seems to be running for a longer period than usual while the period it’s “shut off” or not running between cycling is shorter, it likely indicates a dirty of clogged filter. When the filter is clogged, your system works harder in an effort to provide your home with conditioned (heated or cooled) air. This can result in longer running cycles and shorter resting cycles. Pay attention!
